Government Fish Stall should be opened to meet Protein requirements of Goans

Mr. Shantaram Naik M.P. has suggested that fish requirements of the people of Goa should be met through government stalls just on the lines of vegetables stalls opened by the Horticulture Corporation, sometimes back.

Mr. Naik who was inauguration State Level Workshop on Good Nutrition Board, Goa Unit, as part of Nutrition Week being further said that nutrition needs of the people of the state can best be met if protein rich fish and, vitamins rich vegetables are made accessible to the people easily and at reasonable rates. Mr. Naik further said that public distribution system has to be strengthened and nutrition full items like course grain, pulses etc. should be made available to the people.

Mr. Naik said that mid-day meal scheme is one of the biggest scheme in Asia and its relevance does not get reduced because of some stray incidents in Goa. Mr. Naik said that the government should encourage horticulture so that our reliance on bringing vegetables from outside the state is reduced. Mr. Naik said that it is unfortunate that new rules prepared by the Central Government on labeling , which provides for giving more details on food packets regarding the ingredients per 100 grams have not been brought into force till date.

Dr. Vanita Pinto, Asstt.Professor, Dept. of Preventive and Social Medicine, Goa Medical College, said that if nutrition requirements of children are not looked after in the first two years, such children can never be strong and healthy thereafter.
