The monsoon in the state has become active once more with Thursday turning out to be the season’s wettest day. The rains brought optimism among the farming community about paddy harversts, after a long dry spell had cast a gloom on the community.
“Since the last one month the paddy cultivation had been seriously affected and there was every possibility that production would dip by at least 10 per cent. But this revival of monsoon after a dry spell has been very good for all horticultural crops and paddy," said Director of Agriculture S P Tendulkar.
The deficit in the rainfall, previously at 19cm, is down to just 5cm. Met dept officials believe the deficit could be wiped out in a few days.
When it rains, it pours
"If the rains continue after September 15 then the low lying cultivated areas will be affected. The harvesting will be difficult and the grains will start shedding as well as rotting," Tendulkar explained.
The Anjunem dam too crossed the danger level of 92 metres prompting the water dept to release water from the dam. However, officials said there was no danger of flooding but asked residents to remain vigilant.
