Meteorological Centre Panaji , Goa will soon have a Doppler Weather Radar propose to be installed in the premises of centre at Panaji at a cost of more than 5 crore, and that a building is being constructed there for the purpose. Mr. Shantaram Naik M.P. who visited the centre on Tuesday said that the Government of India is proposing to install 12 Chinese made Radars at important cities and ports in the country.
Mr. Naik said that with the help of the new radar, the Meteorological Centre at Goa will be able to forecast weather conditions more accurately than before. Mr. Naik said that on 24th November 2009, he raised the issue regarding failure of Meteorological Centre of Goa to respond to the situation created by sudden floods at Canacona, Goa, on 02nd October 2009.

Shri Prithviraj Chauhan, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, had, thereafter, directed the Director In charge of Goa Metro logical Office Shri K.V.Singh, to contact Mr. Naik personally in this connection. However, Mr. Naik volunteered himself to visit the office of the Meteorological Centre to understand the working of the centre. Mr. Naik was received in the office by the Director Shri K.V.Singh and other officers. Mr. Naik was accompanied by the GPCC Secretary Shri Gurudas Natekar and Vice Chairman of Goa Khadi Board Dr. Ulhas Parab.
In a statement issued today, Mr. Naik has said that Seismic Unit, Radiation Unit, Surface Unit used for collecting various scientific data are also required to be upgraded and he will take up the issue with Shri Chauhan and also will raise the same in the parliament Mr Naik said that presently Goa Centre, which had the status of a mere Observatory, got the status of a Centre two years back, however the Centre is linked to Regional Centre at Mumbai where the data collected Goa is sent besides the Head Office in New Delhi for analyzing the same.
