Giving in to the tourism department’s request for more shacks at the Calangute and Candolim beach stretches, the Goa Coastal Zone
Management Authority (GCZMA) has permitted 48 more shacks to the existing allotment at Baga-Calangute and Candolim. Prior to the request, the Baga-Calangute stretch had been allotted 81 shacks, while Candolim had been permitted 75 shacks. The tourism department had sought 100 more shacks on the 12km coastline.
On Monday, GCZMA member secretary Michael D’Souza, submitted a letter to the tourism department and attached the minutes of the Authority’s October 16 meeting which discussed the possibility of allowing more shacks at the above mentioned beaches.
Tourism director Swapnil Naik said, “We have received a reply from the GCZMA. Accordingly, 48 more shacks will be permitted. Baga-Calangute can put up 25 additional shacks, while Candolim gets 23 additional shacks.”
A shack owner said, “It should be 75 shacks at Candolim. However, due to lack of availability of land at Dando-Sinquerim, there will be seven shacks less for now. By the end of October, a part of the beach will be retrieved and those seven shacks can be erected then. It’s a natural phenomenon, which has been worsened by the presence of the River Princess.”
The tourism department on October 9 had dispatched a letter to the GCZMA requesting that the number of shacks at Candolim and Calangute be increased. The department had sought 58 more shacks at Calangute and 42 more at Candolim. The request came almost a week after GCZMA had unanimously rejected the proposal to increase the number of beach shacks in Goa.
