Showers, winds expected to take Goa by storm in next 48 hours

A deep depression in the Arabian sea, positioned a considerable distance from the southwest of Goa, is likely to hit the Indian coast
between Gujarat and Konkan region in Maharashtra. However, meteorologists predict that it may have some impact on Goa, especially in the form of heavy rains and wind conditions.

“The cyclone is likely to hit the coast in the region near Dahanu in Maharashtra as per the present trend. Although it may not affect Goa much there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rains,” K V Singh, director, meteorology department, Altinho said.

At around 2.30 pm, the depression was positioned 420 kms southwest of Goa and 700 km south-southwest of Mumbai but was later moving further north said meteorological department officials. “It will further intensify as a cyclone and move,” Singh added.

Due to the depression, coastal parts of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra are expected to experience squally winds with speeds of up to 75 km per hour over the next two days.

The weather system is expected to bring heavy rains over Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep over the next two days.

Sea conditions are also expected to be very rough over the Lakshadweep area, along and off Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra coasts. Fishermen are advised not to venture out into the sea along and off these coasts
