Life convict commits suicide in Goa jail

A beach shack waiter serving life imprisonment for killing a British lady was found dead inside the prison last night, official sources said today.

Anand Kambli, 30, convicted for murdering 52-year-old Denise Higgis, was found hanging in the toilet of his cell at central jail, Aguada.

“We have registered a case of custodial death and started an inquiry,” Inspector General of Prisons, Mihir Vardhan, told PTI this afternoon.

He said the convict used a meter-long bandage, which he had kept after being transported back from medical examination, to hang himself when 23 other convicts from the same cell were fast asleep.

Kambli was convicted for life imprisonment on March 24 for killing Higgis in Margao town, in April 2007.

The prosecution had proved that Kambli, who used to borrow money from the British lady, killed her when she asked him to repay.
