Solar eclipse to be telecast live at Goa Science Centre

The Goa Science Centre at Miramar, here, is making all arrangements for viewing the annual solar eclipse on January 15 when the sun will be covered by the moon to form a dark disc at the centre with a bright rim around.
This eclipse will have the longest duration (10 minutes, 11 seconds) of visibility and is occurring over India after 66 years. It will be visible from the southern tip of India passing over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Next such eclipse will be visible from India in 2019 and 2020.

However, people in Goa and a few other places will be able to see a partial eclipse. It will be visible between 11.15 am and 3 pm with maximum visibility of 65% at about 1.15 pm.

GSC has advised people to take proper precaution while watching the celestial phenomenon by making use of a telescope to see the same. It warns watching the phenomenon with naked eyes may instantly damage the eyes.
The centre has urged people to use good quality solar filters to watch the eclipse directly. It has to be ensured that the aluminium foil used in such filters should be free from any holes or scratches, it advised.

The GSC has made special arrangements for special sun goggles which could be made available at a reasonable cost of Rs 10 at the centre. A telescopic projection of the eclipse will be shown on screen. The auditorium will telecast live the whole phenomenon on a large screen. Special films on the subject will be screened at 11.30 am and 3.30 pm. All the programmes at the centre on the day are open to all.
